About Me

Hello! I’m Moujan (She/Her).

I began transitioning relatively recently, and while it hasn’t been without its difficulties, overall it remains the most positive and fulfilling decision I’ve made in my life. After my bachelor’s degree in psychology, I decided to do a hard pivot to explore what I really wanted out of life and became a carpenter. I completed my training in Pittsburgh, started my own business, and became a commercial travel carpenter before deciding to return to school for my master’s in counseling.

My hobbies include reading, writing, listening to music, and the art of hospitality, which can involve anything from remembering a friend’s favorite flowers to perfecting a new recipe ahead of a potluck. I quite enjoy puttering around, meandering without any intent, and looking at things – art, mushrooms, bugs, neat buildings, anything really. If I could paint, I would paint nothing but clouds. One day, I will learn to paint, and then I will fill my home with clouds, the sky on every wall.

Why I Became A Therapist

My struggles with mental health manifested at a very young age and defined most of my earliest memories. As a result, I developed a fascination with the mind and behavior as a child. While this fascination waned briefly in my late teens and early twenties, that waning coincided with a sharp decline in my mental health.

After overcoming those struggles, pursuing a career in counseling felt like the natural conclusion to a persistent narrative in my life story. Since beginning my transition, however, that natural next step has felt more like a true calling; the clouds parted, the world gained color, and I experienced hope for the first time. I would like to share that hope with my future clients, both trans and otherwise.

How I Work

Collaborative & Empowering: My goal is to be a partner rather than a guide. I can provide tools and insights, but ultimately, you are the expert on your world.

Safety First: Therapy is not always comfortable, but it should always feel safe.

Multicultural & Intersectional: We live at the intersection of our race, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, religion, sexual orientation, and cultural context. Many of our problems are because of outside forces that affects us unjustly and unequally, and no single approach could possibly work for everyone. I stay curious and humble, and I avoid assumptions and expectations to avoid causing unintentional harm.

Routine Feedback: Your feedback is very important to me, and is a key element to how I work. By periodically checking in on progress and the effectiveness of methods, I can better individualize your therapy.

What to Expect

(First 1–2 sessions)

In the first session, I'll learn as much as I can about your background, your needs, what you're struggling with, what you're looking for out of therapy, and what your goals are.

From there, we'll begin working towards your goals and needs in whatever ways you are ready for.

Muj’s Book Recommendations

Whipping Girl by Julia Serrano - A seminal work regarding the transfem experience and transmisogyny; unfortunately, perhaps, as relevant today as it was in 2007. I recommend the 2023 updated version that includes an Afterword by the author regarding the current state of trans affairs in the country.

Lao-tzu's Taoteching, Translated by Red Pine - The foundational text for Taoism, though you don't need to call yourself a Taoist to benefit from a read. The Tao Te Ching contains no proscriptions or laws, only philosophy. I've read many English renditions of Tao Te Ching, and this is by far the most approachable I've encountered.

The Essential Rumi, Translations by Coleman Barks - Rumi speaks to spirituality and the human condition in a way that bridges culture and context. Barks' translation manages to capture both the meaning and the movement of each poem.

Poems of the Masters: China's Classic Anthology of T'ang and Sung Dynasty Verse, Translated by Red Pine - This anthology contains a wealth of haunting poems about loss, subjugation, alienation, and friendship. Connecting with a poem about missing a friend written a thousand years ago on the other side of the world makes me feel very human.

If On a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino - My go-to recommendation for someone who wants to get into reading. It's a light read, very funny in its own strange way, and a work of staggering creative genius. This novel is an excellent reminder that art and life don't need to be serious to be beautiful.

Muj’s Blog Picks

Resources I often share with clients.

Offering unwavering support for trans kids begins with the most fundamental expression of care: telling them you love them unconditionally. For parents wondering, ā€œHow can I support my trans child?ā€ reassuring your child of your love is essential.

The use of singular "they/them" pronouns to refer to individuals who identify as non-binary or gender non-conforming is becoming increasingly common. A recent study examined how the adoption of these pronouns is impacting language and societal perceptions of gender.

Resources for Supporting Trans Kids and Parents of Trans Kids

Supporting a transgender child can be both rewarding and challenging, especially when you’re unsure where to turn for help. Utilizing resources for trans kids and for yourself as a parent or caretaker can make a significant impact on your journey. Access to the right tools and support systems is essential to ensure your child feels validated and empowered.

Arrive Therapy offers a comprehensive range of support services for transgender, non-binary, and gender-questioning individuals through their trans and non-binary groups. These groups provide a safe and inclusive space for members of the LGBTQIA+ community to explore their gender identity, navigate the challenges of transitioning, and receive support from experienced therapists and peers.
