Your Voice, Your Gender, Your Way
Voice coaching for trans and nonbinary folks with Wes Harris
Your voice is one of the most personal expressions of who you are. For many trans and nonbinary people, the way their voice sounds doesn't yet reflect their gender identity — and that gap can affect confidence, comfort, and how safe they feel in the world.
Gender-affirming voice coaching is a guided, skill-building process that helps you develop a voice that aligns with your gender expression. It's not about masking who you are — it's about discovering and strengthening the voice that already belongs to you.

The Building Blocks of Your Voice
Wes focuses on the core elements that shape how gender is perceived in a voice:
Pitch:
Finding a range that feels natural and authentic to you.
Resonance:
Where your voice vibrates in your body, which has a significant effect on how masculine, feminine, or androgynous it sounds.
Inflection:
The rise and fall patterns in your speech, which carry a lot of gender information.
Weight and Tone:
The overall quality and texture of your voice and how it lands.
Voice Is Often the Last Piece - and One of the Hardest
For many trans people, voice is one of the most emotionally significant parts of transition. A voice that doesn't match how you see yourself can cause dysphoria, make you feel less safe being out, or create anxiety in everyday situations like phone calls or meetings.
Voice coaching gives you practical tools and a supportive space to work through those challenges at your own pace.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Never! I believe that voice work is about adding additional colors and sounds to your vocal expression, rather than eliminating or changing sounds that you are already making.
-
With a few minutes per day of practicing targeted skills, you can expect to notice real changes in your voice in 6-10 weeks. Many folks continue voice work for 6-12 months to further coordinate the voice, and some folks enjoy voice work so much that they come back again and again. There is no one-size-fits-all equation.
-
It can be frustrating to work towards something slowly when we are eager to see results, but with practice and patience, anybody can develop additional vocal skills. After setting goals, we'll identify specific skills that are needed to achieve those goals, and use functional exercises that teach the body how to coordinate the muscles of the vocal mechanism. When we approach the voice from a kind-hearted, mindful, and curiosity-oriented space, even small changes can have a huge impact.
-
That's okay! I bring a curiosity-oriented, playful, and mindful approach to voice coaching. In each session, we will explore different vocal qualities, and mindfully check in with how they feel for you. You'll never be pushed to sound a certain way.
-
The first session is a great opportunity to check in with your voice, explore your range and other vocal qualities, and set goals. It's a low-stakes, low-pressure environment.
-
Many different things bring us to voice work, so there's no one-size-fits-all answer, but the most meaningful and profound change occurs when you are willing to experiment, try something unfamiliar, and have fun making new sounds!
