Personal Grooming and Social Cues for Trans Men:

Lessons Your Dad Would Have Taught You, with Dax E.

Monday, October 12th at 6:30 PM

About Dax

Dax (he/him) is a transgender man who had to spend more than ten years figuring out how to groom his hair and beard without the help of a supportive family member. This workshop is the guide he wished he'd had.

He's also a therapist at Arrive Therapy, where he works with queer clients from an LGBTQ-affirming, body-positive, sex-positive approach.

Outside of work you'll find him at an indie movie theater, crate-digging at a local record shop, volunteering with queer organizations, or at a hardcore show. He makes music too.

Whatever else is happening, the dogs get plenty of couch time.

A lot of personal grooming knowledge gets handed down at home. A dad shows his son how to shave, or a grandfather or uncle takes him to the barber and teaches him what to ask for. Many trans men never got that, especially those who came out into families that weren't supportive, so they piece it together alone.

Dax spent more than ten years figuring out grooming without help from a male role model. This workshop gives you what took him a decade to learn, in a space where everyone else is also learning.

Who it's for

Trans men, especially anyone early in transition who missed grooming guidance growing up.

What we'll cover

  • Barbershop basics: What to expect when you walk in and how a visit usually goes.

  • Barbershop language: Clipper lengths and other terms, so you can ask for the cut you want.

  • Etiquette and social cues: The unwritten rules of the chair and how to read them.

  • At-home grooming: The products worth having, from moisturizer to aftershave, and how to use them.

A good haircut and a routine that works can do a lot for how you feel in your own skin. Missing this guidance growing up can also carry grief, and that has a place here too.

How it works

The session runs about 45 minutes of instruction, then open Q&A. We'll start with a quick icebreaker and ask what you're hoping to take away. Questions can go in the chat at any point. Cameras on are encouraged, since seeing other guys at different stages of transition helps the space feel more affirming.
