The Power of Chosen Family

Finding Support Beyond Biology
Not all families are defined by blood or legal ties. For many, including LGBTQ+ folks and anyone feeling disconnected from relatives, a “chosen family” offers the support, validation, and sense of belonging that may be missing from their family of origin.
What Is a Chosen Family?
A chosen family is comprised of friends, mentors, and community members who are intentionally selected for mutual care, trust, and respect. These relationships are built on acceptance and shared values, rather than obligation or tradition. Research shows that having a strong chosen family reduces feelings of isolation, improves self-esteem, and supports mental wellness, especially for those navigating rejection or strained relationships with relatives.
Why Does Chosen Family Matter?
Supportive social networks can be life-changing. Studies indicate LGBTQ+ youth with affirming, non-biological support have lower rates of depression and anxiety, and experience a greater sense of safety and resilience.
Chosen family connections help people feel seen and valued as their authentic selves, and can even buffer against life stressors and transitions.
Practical Steps to Build Supportive Relationships
Reflect on what’s important to you, then seek out groups, activities, or communities that share your interests and values.
Reach out to those you already trust.
Deepen connections by being vulnerable and sharing experiences.
Attend support groups, join clubs, or volunteer for causes that matter to you.
Make regular plans for connection, both in person and virtually, to nurture these relationships over time.
Support, acceptance, and meaningful connections can be found and fostered, regardless of your history or circumstances.
