The Trevor Project's 2024 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People paints a sobering picture of the challenges faced by this vulnerable community. The key findings underscore the pressing need for comprehensive mental health resources and support systems tailored to LGBTQ+ youth.

Alarmingly High Rates of Mental Health Concerns

The survey revealed that a staggering 73% of LGBTQ+ youth reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety, and 58% reported symptoms of depression. These numbers are significantly higher than their non-LGBTQ+ peers, highlighting the unique stressors and challenges faced by this community.

Suicide Risk and Self-Harm

Perhaps the most concerning finding is the alarmingly high rate of suicide risk and self-harm among LGBTQ+ youth. The survey found that 45% of respondents had seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, and 21% had made at least one suicide attempt. Additionally, 63% reported engaging in self-harm behaviors, such as cutting or burning themselves.

Lack of Access to Mental Health Resources

Despite the urgent need for mental health support, the survey revealed that many LGBTQ+ youth face significant barriers to accessing appropriate resources. Only 37% of respondents reported receiving psychological or emotional counseling from a mental health professional in the past year. This lack of access to professional support services can exacerbate existing mental health challenges and increase the risk of adverse outcomes.
